Abstract:

Objective To investigate the current situation of airway secretion aspiration performed by nurses in adults with invasive mechanical ventilation. Methods A questionnaire was designed by the drafting group of the Chinese Nursing Association “Practices Standard for Endotracheal Suctioning in Adult Receiving Invasive Mechanical Ventilation”. An online questionnaire platform was used to make electronic questionnaires. From March to April 2019,21,279 nurses were investigated by the Critical Care and Respiratory Committee of the Chinese Nursing Association. Results 10,679（50.19%） nurses chose to perform aspiration on time and on demand. 17,554（82.49%） nurses preferred airway sputum aspiration. 16,167（75.98%） nurses’ choice of ‘the length of time to give high concentration of oxygen before and after sputum aspiration’ was incorrect. 3,715（17.46%） nurses always or often dropped saline into the airway during sputum aspiration. 4,857（22.83%） nurses did not know the frequency of replacing closed suction tubes. Conclusion The theory and practice of Chinese nurses in the suction of airway secretions from invasive mechanical ventilation in adults need to be unified and standardized.
