Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technology refers to models and related technologies with the ability to generate content such as text, images, audio, video, data, code, and patterns. GenAI is influencing and changing academic research and paper writing. In order to maintain scientific research integrity, prevent academic misconduct, and ensure the authenticity, accuracy, and transparency of the scientific research process and results, the Chinese Nursing Journals Publishing House refers to the recommended norms of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors and related guidelines, and stipulates the following matters regarding the use of GenAI technology in the writing and review process of nursing scientific and technological papers.
I. Regulations on the Use of GenAI Technology by Authors in the Paper Writing Process
1. Since GenAI does not possess the basic attributes of an author and cannot assume the corresponding responsibilities of a signed author, GenAI tools, their products, and teams cannot be signed as authors of the paper.
2. GenAI technology cannot be used for writing the entire paper or important parts of the paper (such as research methods, results, and interpretation and analysis of the results). All content within the scope of scientific contribution or intellectual labor should be completed by the authors.
3. GenAI technology cannot be used to generate, alter, or manipulate data graphs, image graphs, photo graphs, forest plots, surgical audio and video, and other data chart materials, or to change or manipulate the original research data, research process, and results.
4. Authors must be responsible for the authenticity, integrity, and scientific nature of the paper content, including the parts assisted by GenAI. If the author uses GenAI technology in the research and paper writing, it should be described in the "Materials and Methods" (or similar section) of the paper. At the same time, after the main text and before the references, the use and review of GenAI technology should be disclosed, transparent, and described in detail.
Declaration of the Application of Generative Artificial Intelligence Technology: During the preparation and writing of this article, the author used [Specific Name of GenAI Tool/Service] for [Purpose of Use: Such as literature research/data analysis/chart production, etc.]. After using this tool/service, the author reviewed and edited the content as needed and assumes full responsibility for the content of the publication.
5. References generated by GenAI that have not been verified should not be directly used. Generally, content marked by other authors as generated by artificial intelligence should not be cited as original literature. If it is necessary to cite, an explanation should be provided.
6. Authors should cooperate with the editorial department to submit and archive the parts assisted by GenAI (text, charts, programs, etc.) as supplementary materials for the reviewers and editors to judge the originality of the paper.
II. Regulations on the Use of GenAI Technology in the Review and Processing of Manuscripts
1. Paper review implies responsibilities and obligations that can only be undertaken and completed by humans. To avoid possible risks of copyright infringement, privacy violations, and violations of security and confidentiality obligations, it is prohibited to upload manuscripts and supplementary materials to publicly available GenAI technology platforms and use them as tools for proposing review opinions and paper revisions during the paper review process.
2. When reviewers suspect that the author violates the requirements of this regulation in using GenAI, they should report to the editorial department and explain the reasons in the review comments.
3. Editors should not use publicly available GenAI technology platforms for the initial review of papers and the standardization processing of manuscripts.
III. Investigation and Handling of Violations of GenAI Technology Use Regulations in Paper Writing and Review
1. To prevent the abuse of GenAI, the Chinese Nursing Journals Publishing House will adopt various technical means for pre-emptive prevention and control. If the editorial committee deems that the author has violated the GenAI use regulations in paper writing, the manuscript will be directly rejected or withdrawn.
2. In serious cases, the author will be included in the list of academic dishonesty and prohibited from submitting manuscripts to the series of journals of the Chinese Nursing Journals Publishing House within 2 years. If the author is a journal reviewer, they will also be prohibited from participating in the review work.
3. If a reviewer violates the above regulations during the paper review, resulting in information leakage or infringement, etc., they will be prohibited from participating in the review work and assume corresponding responsibilities when necessary.
Scientific research must comply with requirements such as scientificity, rigor, standardization, originality, and innovation. We call on the majority of nursing scientific researchers to abide by academic norms, adhere to academic ethics, and use information tools rationally, normatively, and reasonably for academic research and review work. These regulations shall come into effect as of the date of issuance and will be updated and adjusted as the GenAI technology develops and be released in a timely manner.
